The flip side

As a corrective, this article in Newsweek is useful, reminding us that not all technological advancements are good for the world. Like anything, the Internet and social networking can be used for good or evil.

  1. It's extremely important that we recognize this reality. Freedom of Speech is a privilege for which we must be appreciative, yet at the same time, we must recognize that with that comes a serious responsibility. We have to choose to use these media tools for good and not bad. Unfortunately, many of us are aware of the Facebook page the article makes mention of, namely "The 3rd Intifada," which basically called for attacks against Israel and its ultimate demise. Not only must we be aware of the dangers of these media tools, but we must also learn how to combat those who take advantage of them for negative and harmful purposes.

  2. This is a tricky situation. On the one hand new media tools should not be used for terrorist plots or to build hate followings. But as a country with a 1st amendment what can we do? There's always that fine line between combating evil and subduing the rights of American citizens. And we can't create a Cold War-like fear again just this time with a new enemy.

  3. This is really interesting. If I'm not mistaken this sort of applies to every form of technology, the bad but bad. In social media and the internets case, I wonder if the Govt.;s new censorship plans will make the internet less dangerous. Mubarak must be kicking himself, upset that he never thought to regulate the internet before.
