Be careful what you say

A lesson in why politicians should be more careful about their language:

In 2008, candidate Obama declared in no uncertain terms that he would close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.

In 2009, President-elect Obama issued an executive order saying that the prison would close within one year (for which he was criticized by outlets like the Wall Street Journal).

Today? It's staying open, the Obama administration says.

Oops.

  1. The WSJ wasn't the only one who criticized Obama for this. A few months ago, SNL called out the president on not bringing the change he promised.

  2. Are politicians not allowed to change their minds? I think that things in the world have changed in the past year, and while we can definitely hold him accountable for sounding contradictory, i don't think it means he's totally in the wrong.
At a certain point shouldn't we, as Americans, have some faith in our own president. (not to say that people actually do...)

  3. I feel like President Obama promised a lot of things throughout his campaign, but he hasn’t accomplished much, whatever the reasons are. I see this as another proof that Obama is just like any other politicians who wanted to get elected: good speaker, lofty ideals, but nothing "takhless." I heard Dick Morris say in an interview that Obama is not a real leader even though he would like to be one. This could also explain the fact that he is unable to implement his radical ideas for change.
